Works Well
I've owned this set for several months, and this was my first experience with using a "old school" double edged razor. It did take some time to adjust to the new technique, but now that I have, I'll never go back. Some people question the razors ability to make a close shave, but I would argue that were talking about a RAZOR BLADE, the better your technique, the closer and more efficient you will become. The set itself is high quality and of a simple design. This formula has withstood the test of time, and it is worth your time also.

Descent Razor
I bought this product because I wanted to start using the double edge blades readily found in many stores. I could never find the razor that is used with the double edge blades. I had one as a young man, it was passed down to me from my grandfather but I lost track of it after joining the Marines. Stores just stopped carrying the razors for some reason then I saw the Merkur on Amazon and although it was very expensive I decided to buy one. I have been a long time user of the Gillette Fusion and Mach 3 razor & blades so the bar was pretty high in terms of comparison. I get a closer shave with the Gillette products but there is something to be said about using shaving soap and a shaving brush. It feels classic and is great on those cold mornings, but the results are not quite as good as what I get with the Gillette products. With the Merkur you have to take your time and since there is no adjustments for cut depth you must be mindful of the cutting angle to get the closer shave. The blades do last longer per use and are definitely cheaper than Gillette blades for the fusion and mach 3 system. One shortcoming I have with the Merkur razor is the lenght of the handle. It's too short. I mean it fits in the grip and palm nicely but it takes some getting use to as you run through the strokes of your shave. Last, the whole set is very attractive and for me that goes a long way. I could recommend this product to someone else but I would caution them to maintain their old shaving system for those times when an extra close shave is needed.

Great Starter Set
This is a great starter set. The razor and stand are great quality and compliment each other well. The razor also gives a good close shave. The brush is of mediocre quality but is good for getting started.
